How to Play Balloon Race
Five steps from your opening stake to the finish line. A slot you have to beat, a decision that costs extra, and a race where you hold every colour at once.
Learn exactly how each feature fires on the Balloon Race bonus mechanics guide.
Set Your Stake
Join the Balloon Race table and pick a stake between $0.10 and $2,500, depending on what your room allows. This one number does more work than it looks: it is your cost per qualifying spin, the floor for any Top-Up you buy later, and the figure your winning multiplier gets applied to at the end of the round.
Beat the Qualifier
Now you are on a plain 5x3 slot with 10 fixed winlines. Card ranks from 10 to Ace and a pair of ribbon symbols fill the grid and pay small line wins along the way, but you are really hunting two symbols: the scatter, which sometimes carries a multiplier, and the Expanding Wild, which covers its whole reel. Land any three of those specials in one spin and you are through.
Choose Your Spin Mode
Impatient? XXXtreme Spin costs five times your base bet and guarantees one special symbol on every spin. Super XXXtreme costs fifty times and guarantees two, leaving you one short. Evolution Gaming publishes a lower return for both — 96.00% and 96.03% against 96.09% on a normal spin — so what you are buying is pace, not edge.
Decide on Top-Up
Once you have qualified you hold a multiplier for each of the four balloon colours, built from the scatter multipliers you collected. Press TOP UP and three to six balloons are released, never more than two of a colour, each adding value to that colour's finish-line multiplier. It costs at least your base bet again. It changes your payouts, not the race.
Watch the Race
The host loads a machine with 80 balls — 20 yellow, 20 purple, 20 green, 20 red — and starts drawing. Every ball lifts the matching balloon one step. The first to climb five steps ends the round, and the multiplier you were holding on that colour is applied to your bet. You never picked a colour, so every qualified player gets paid something.
What Each Symbol Is For
The qualifier grid has two symbols that matter and a lot of scenery. Knowing which is which saves you from celebrating a five-of-a-kind that pays pennies while the spin you actually needed passed you by.
Bonus Features Explained
Every phase runs on its own logic. Here's the straight version of what unfolds in each one — no dressing it up.
Qualification Slot
A 5x3 grid, 10 fixed lines, and one job: land three special symbols in a single spin. Scatters and Expanding Wilds both count, and they can arrive in any mix — three scatters, two wilds and a scatter, whatever gets you to three.
Scatter Multipliers
Scatters sometimes land with a multiplier printed on them. Those values follow you into the live round and feed straight into the four colour multipliers you carry to the finish line.
Top-Up Phase
Optional, and it costs extra. Three to six balloons pop out, no more than two of each colour, each adding value to that colour's finish-line multiplier. Raise the Top-Up stake and the values on offer climb with it.
Live Balloon Race
Eighty balls, four colours, twenty of each. The host draws, the matching balloon rises a step, and the first to reach five steps decides which of your multipliers gets paid.
Quick Strategy Tips
Budget for the qualifier, not the race. The studio round always pays you something, so it is not what empties your balance. The blank spins in front of it are. Decide how many spins you will give the reels before you sit down, and treat that number as the real cost of one trip to the studio.
Understand what XXXtreme actually sells. Both boosted modes carry a lower published return than a normal spin. They shorten the wait and they raise the cost of every spin at the same time, which is a fine trade if you are short on time and a bad one if you are short on bankroll.
Check the payback. A normal spin of Balloon Race returns 96.09%, which matches the standard for live game shows — a fair expectation mathematically. Bear in mind that figure is drawn from millions of rounds, not the session you're in.
Treat Top-Up as a second stake. It is easy to spend more on Top-Up than on qualifying, because it feels like part of the round you already paid for. It is not. It buys bigger numbers on the finish line and does nothing to the draw, so price it the way you would price any other bet.
Accept the split. Your multipliers spread across four colours and exactly one of them gets paid. Watching your biggest number sit on a balloon that finishes second is the normal shape of this game, not bad luck you can correct next round. Set a stop before the first spin and keep it when that happens.
